My name isn’t Badger6052 it is Steve Edwards and I live in Palm Springs, CA. I just got through viewing “The Pacific” – finished viewing all parts in April 2011. I was amazed at the similarity of Eugene Sledge’s and my dad’s experience [Cpl. James D. Edwards 1st Marine Division 11th Marines - Forward Artillery Observer and rifleman]. They might have known each other! My dad went in about the same time as Gene, it appears they both missed the Battle of Guadalcanal. My dad’s first fighting island was Peleliu; he went in on the second wave. I think the second wave Marines had a very different experience than the first wavers. I wish I could ask him a few questions about that but sadly he passed on Nov 15, 2007. He went on to fight on Okinawa and was part of the troops sent to China [to help keep order], as did your dad, and then caught a troop ship home headed back to San Diego in early January and was mustered out in Mid-January 1946. He always viewed his time in the Marines as the most important time of his life. Semper Fi! Steve Edwards
